However, we always err on the side of caution with babies under 12 months. It is advisable to only keep babies this young outside for 5-15 minutes at a time in freezing temps.

But it does work for 1-3 hour hikes, which is more than you’ll need when trekking with a baby in the cold. Overall, the Clevr is a budget-friendly option for light snowshoers looking for a lightweight, comfortable carrier with added storage space.
What Makes a Great Baby Carrier for Snowshoers?
Choosing the best baby carrier for snowshoeing is a bit different than choosing a standard carrier. For instance, considering things like weight, adjustability, and room for thick winter clothing are just a few elements to keep in mind. This is why we’ve focused on these important aspects in finding our winners:
- Comfortable Fit: The best carrier will match the length of your torso and offer an adjustable fit with comfortable shoulder straps. For minimal back stress, choose a carrier that buckles at the chest and wraps or buckles around the waist for added support. Additionally, hip padding is ideal. However, you’ll have to consider your winter attire in the measurements as well.
- Room for Thick Clothing: We also considered a bundled toddler during testing. There needs to be enough room in your setup, snow pants and all.
- Lightweight: Heavy carriers will wear you out and cause neck strain. Fortunately, newer models are mostly going to be of sturdy, but light construction.
- Style: Essentially, you’ll choose between a front or back carrier. If they’re bundled, backpack carriers are ideal. But if they’re a bit younger, keep them on your front. In addition, a soft-frameless style is comfortable and keeps toddlers close. However, we find a framed backpack carrier is far superior for snowshoeing and hiking. Also, front carriers can obstruct your view of the trail.
- Storage: Space for a hydration bladder is ideal. And since you’re likely to be snowshoeing in mild weather, it’s unlikely that you’ll run into freezing problems. Extra pockets for snacks and a small lunch are appreciated.
- Other Features: Additionally, an integrated pillowed headrest for baby will help them nod off. And, a sunshade is ideal for shielding children from the wind. Have you ever tried to keep sunglasses on a toddler?

How to Clean a Child Carrier
Like other pieces of gear, your baby carrier will need to be cared for to keep it in premium shape.
After all, being out in the snow and withstanding spills and leaks can cause a carrier to get dirty, fast. Here we detail how to clean your carrier, plus how to care for your carrier.
Required supplies
Before the cleaning begins, you’ll want to make sure you have the necessary supplies. Round these up:
- Vacuum with hose attachment
- Bathtub or large plastic tub big enough to fit the entire carrier
- Clean sponge or washcloth in a similar color to your carrier (this protects the fabric from leaching color)
- Old toothbrush or Nylon brush
- Unscented Castille or ph-neutral soap (do not use detergents)
Empty Pockets and Remove Pads
Now, it’s time to prepare your carrier for washing.
First, be sure to empty all of the pockets in your carrier. If there are spills, dab them up with a washcloth.
Then, remove any detachable pockets, hip belts, pillows, drool pads, etc… This will make cleaning easier. Just be sure to remember where all of the pieces go.
Plus, many of these detachable accessories can be machine washed separately.
Vacuum Crevices and Pockets
Next, be sure to vacuum up any debris from the interior. Get into the little nooks and crannies as much as possible.
Then it’s time to pretreat stains, but it’s easier to do if you get all solids off first with your vacuum.
Pre-treat Stains
Stains are bound to happen when you’re dealing with babies.
If you have a few, be sure to pre-treat them with your detergent of choice. This will make scrubbing easier later.
Soak and Scrub Caked Dirt
In addition, dirt can easily get caked on certain areas of your carrier. Especially if you have a child that is constantly going in and out of the carrier to the muddy ground.
Use your brush to scrub these off, or soak them first if they’re really stubborn.
It’s completely ok that the frame is submerged.
Submerge and Soak
Now, it’s time to fully wash. If your carrier has a lot of dirt on it, consider a pre-rinse before this step.
- Fill your tub with warm soapy water. Make sure there is enough to completely cover your carrier.
- Now, submerge your carrier fully. Swish the soapy water around it until it is fully covered. You can come back every 15-20 minutes and swish around the suds again.
- Let your pack soak for at least an hour to loosen tough stains and spills. Oxy cleaners also work great to lift yucky dirt and sweat.
Drain and Rinse
Next, drain the dirty water from your tub. Then, you’ll want to rinse your carrier.
You can fill up the tub with fresh water and swish it around again, then drain. Follow this up with rinsing with your shower head or a hose.
Dry your Carrier
Finally, it’s time to dry! You’ll want to dry your carrier in a shady area outdoors, or a well-ventilated area inside.
It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight since this can damage and age the material.
However, we all know by now (post 2020) that sunlight can help disinfect cloth. So, if you’re ok with a little sun bleaching, go for it.
Importantly, avoid the dryer, even though it’s tempting! It can melt plastic parts, damage the frame or damage your dryer.
Can I Put my Child Carrier in The Washer or Dryer?
The short answer? No, it’s not good to put your baby carrier in the washer or dryer.
Not only will rubber and plastic parts melt with heat, the fabric is sure to can get damaged. Furthermore, the agitation from the washer can also wear off the water-resistant coating on your carrier’s fabric.
I remember once I tried to wash and dry black-out drapes, it was a Disaster.
In theory, soft, frameless carriers can be okay in the washer (check care labels first). However, you’ll want to be sure to fasten all buckles and velcro before putting it in. These models should also never go in the dryer.
As a general rule, it’s never a good idea to try to put carriers or gear like backpacks in the washer or dryer. It can be a very expensive mistake. Especially if the metal frames clank around in the dryer and cause damage.
